Blackbeard's Treasure Map is the first episode of Legends of the Hidden Temple. Despite being listed as the first episode, it was neither the first episode taped or aired. The reason it is listed as the first episode is because it was the first episode that Nickelodeon planned out. It was the nineteenth episode to complete production and the thirtieth to air.

Moat Crossing

Blackbeard1

Floating Ring moat

One player from each team sat on a floating ring. When Kirk said "go", that player pulled himself across the Moat as quickly as possible using an attached rope. Once across, he stepped off, grabbed the ring, and threw it back to his partner who proceeded to jump on and pull himself across. As soon as the second teammate stepped onto the deck, it was his job to run over and hit the gong.

Blackbeard2
Hidden-temple-celebration-o

The meanest, ugliest, most ornery pirate who ever sailed the seven seas was Blackbeard. He went into battle with ribbons tied into his long, black beard and tucked long, smoking fuses under his hat to make him look more frightening. When things got dull, he would light fires on his own ship or shoot one of his own crew members just to keep them on their toes. Blackbeard liked to attack Spanish treasure ships and steal their jewels. If people took too long taking off their rings, Blackbeard would cut off their fingers. Once, he even made a man eat his own ears. When he gathered all the treasure, he would row ashore with just a few men and bury it in secret. Sometimes, the men who helped him never came back. According to legend, the last of his fourteen wives held a map to this treasure, and it eventually found its way to the Temple.

The Silver Snakes are twelve-year-old Hector, who plays the trumpet in the Middlebrook Middle School Band, and eleven-year-old Karissa, who wants to be a teacher. The Red Jaguars are eleven-year-olds James and Sabrina, who both play soccer.

Cannonballs (Water Ramp)

Blackbeard3

The old pirate ships had rather primitive cannons; they shot big heavy cannonballs which had to be loaded in by hand. At the base of each “loading ramp” was a “cannonball”. When Kirk said “go”, the players had to push a cannonball up to the top of the ramp. Then, they got a shot of water, slid back down, grabbed the next cannonball, and then climbed up again. The player with the most cannonballs at the top after sixty seconds won. James won the game after successfully pushing one cannonball up the ramp while Hector was unable to score.

Search for Blackbeard's Treasure (Peanut Shaft)

Blackbeard4

Like most pirates, Blackbeard hid his treasure by burying it. In this game, Karissa and Sabrina's job is to dig the treasure up. Each "treasure shaft" had pieces of treasure buried at the bottom. When Kirk said "go", each player had to start digging for treasure; once she found treasure, she had to climb to the top of the shaft and place it in the bin atop the shaft. This process repeated until all the treasure was found or sixty seconds had elapsed. The game ended in a tie, with both girls finding two pieces of treasure.

Hoist the Jolly Roger (Pulley Pillar)

Blackbeard5

As pirate ships were about to attack, they would raise a skull-and-crossbones flag called the Jolly Roger. When Kirk said "go", one partner had to grab a piece of the Jolly Roger. The second partner, elevated at this point, then pulled down on his end of the rope. This sent the first player up, after which he would place the piece of the flag in the correct, upright position. There were eight pieces of the flag to set up in sixty seconds; both teams managed to get four pieces of the Jolly Roger in place in the allotted time.

Temple Run

Tumblr mr8xvcHDdK1qdxpbvo1 400
Blackbeard6

Sabrina went into the temple first. Starting at The Cave of Sighs, Sabrina immediately encounters the first Temple Guard and had to give up her pendant of life. After doing so, she tried to enter The Wheel Room by opening up the lower door, but after multiple attempts, the door didn't open, so she had to climb up and try the upper door which did open. Sabrina proceeded to enter The Wheel Room, where she slowly lifts the rock slab and tries to open up the door to The Room of Harmonic Convergence but it didn't work. However, she made a crucial mistake, as she kept hitting above the actuator five times before slowly retreating back into The Cave of Sighs. With no other choice, Sabrina heads up into The Room of the Three Gargoyles instead, where she hits two out of the three tongues from the gargoyles. (while Sabrina attempted to hit all three, she missed hitting the tongue on the second gargoyle). After hitting the third tongue, a sound effect for a door opening played, however the door leading to The Troubled Bridge didn't open. So, Sabrina tried to slide the door, but it remained locked. Sound effects continued to play as Sabrina continuously walked around the room and even attempted to open up the Temple Guard door! Eventually, the door leading to the Troubled Bridge finally opened and Sabrina proceeds to walk across and open up the door to The Observatory. Up in The Observatory, she spins the sundial and climbs down into The Heart Room, which happened to be a dead end. After trying the door leading to The Treasure Room and the door leading back to The Wheel Room (which unfortunately remained locked). Sabrina had to climb back up into The Observatory, walk back across the Troubled Bridge to find a new path. Regardless, there was nothing else Sabrina could do, and time ran out as she re-entered The Room of the Three Gargoyles.

Trivia

  • This was the first episode to begin production. Kirk Fogg had mentioned in a radio interview for SUNY Albany that the first Legends episode filming took eighteen hours; since taping ran late, the whole episode was filmed on a day that featured Layout V of the temple.
  • Olmec's voice was softer compared to other episodes.
  • This episode and The Belly Button of Buddha are the only episodes in Season 1 to not show someone dressed as the historical figure.
  • While Olmec was giving the Red Jaguars information about the Temple, the camera revealed that the Pirate's Cove's ship wheel had already been turned, indicating that the Dungeon was not to be entered from that room.
  • This was the first of three episodes where the first player fails to obtain the artifact but the second player does not enter the Temple. The others are The Lucky Pig of Amelia Earhart and The Golden Goblet of Attila the Hun.
  • The Purple Parrots and Green Monkeys in this episode later participated in The Paintbrush of Leonardo da Vinci, wearing the same team colors.
  • According to Olmec, Blackbeard made a captive eat his own ears. In actuality, the pirate who made his captive eat his own ears was Ned Lowe.
  • In production order, this is one of the two season premieres where the Orange Iguanas do not enter the Temple (the second being The Maya Legend of the Hero Twins).
  • While Sabrina was heading back into The Cave of Sighs from The Wheel Room, the camera crew can be seen as she was about to climb up the ladder.
