Steps of Knowledge

One of the most courageous, outspoken women of her day was the African-American Sojourner Truth. Over six feet tall, she was an imposing figure and a fiery speaker. In the 1840's she began touring the country, speaking out against slavery. But her name wasn't always Sojourner Truth. Her slave name was Isabella Bomefree, and legend has it that once she was freed, she began smuggling food to Union soldiers who were severely lacking supplies. Instead of thanking her, the Lieutenant in charge thought she was spying.

"Your troops are undernourished— I was simply trying to help!"

"No one can be that nice without an uterior motive; I think we'll just detain you until we get to the truth."

And with that, the Lieutenant imprisoned her in a barn. She was there but a few hours when she heard a faint scratching.

"Miss Bomefree, you helped free me in Jacksonville."

"And you freed me eight months ago; we're here to return the favor."

And with that, the grateful soldiers set her free.

"Here's some bread and some corn to keep you going!"

Isabella made it to freedom. But the Lieutenant didn't let the matter drop.

"Who was that woman?"

"She was a soldier of truth, at least that's what the men say!"

The Lieutenant misunderstood, and called her Sojourner Truth, and the name stuck. She kept the ear of corn to remind her of those brave men, and it eventually wound up in the Temple.

Temple Games

The Green Monkeys are Tess, who enjoys gymnastics and wants to be the first female President, and Eddie, who plays basketball and wants to be a marine biologist. The Orange Iguanas are Shannon, who enjoys ice hockey and wants to be an ecologist, and Jerome, who loves football and science.

Feed the Union Soldiers (Rotating Levers)[]

To bring food to the undernourished Union army, Sojourner Truth traveled over hill and dale; here, Eddie and Shannon would bring food to the hungry troops. When Kirk gave the signal, they would run around to the pedestal and grab a loaf of bread in order to drop it in their box; whoever got the most loaves of bread within 60 seconds would win. Both players used different approaches to grab the loaves, which served them well— they tied with three loaves each, awarding both them a half pendant.

Rally Preparation (Oversized Table)[]

Sojourner Truth carried the message of freedom across the nation; Jerome and Tess would carry her message to awaiting people, copies of which were on the other side. When Kirk gave the signal, they would crawl out to grab one of 10 scrolls, then return to drop it in their bin (the teams' bins were mixed up by accident); whoever got all 10 scrolls, or was furthest along within 60 seconds would win. Tess won 4-3, giving the Green Monkeys a full pendant.

Hide Your Money (Trampoline Web)[]

Hide Your Money Temple Game

During the Civil War, Sojourner Truth raised funds for the Union Army; before the teams were 8 money bags to be locked away in the vault next to the web. When Kirk gave the signal, one player would run forward and launch him/herself onto the web, then drop a money bag into the vault; whoever dropped all 8 money bags into the vault, or was furthest along within 60 seconds would win. The Green Monkeys won 4-3, sending them to the Temple.

Temple Run

Eddie went into the temple first, moving at a fast pace. He started off by heading up into The Crypt, where he got lucky as the first book that he pulled, opened up the door to The Pit of the Pendulum. Immediately grabbing onto the rope swing, and knocking over the column, Eddie unlocks the door to The Chamber of the Sacred Markers in the process. But he ends up falling off the rope swing while he made an attempt to grab the ropes in order to get back onto the platform. With no other choice, Eddie is forced to climb up The Wall Climb, to which he had a bit of trouble at the midway point, but he gets back up to the platform in no time flat and heads into The Chamber with Tess cheering Eddie on. Upon entering the room, Eddie was confused on what to do, and it wasn't before long till the first temple guard emerged from behind the door, scaring him in the process. After giving up his pendant of life, Eddie now understood on what he had to do to move forward, and he completes the objective at a good pace. But even after placing the missing markers on the wall, Eddie had to push hard on them in order to unlock the door to The Room of the Ancient Warriors. In there, Eddie decided to try the middle armor first, and while he was successful in unlocking the door to The Shrine of the Silver Monkey. He ended up getting caught by the second temple guard who was hiding behind said armor. And was removed from the temple with 1:47 left on the clock.

Now it was Tess's turn to try her luck. Moving at a moderate but steady pace, Tess navigates through the various rooms without issues. But when she enters The Room of the Ancient Warriors, she ended up trying the armor on the left despite the fact that the door to The Shrine was already opened. But once Kirk called to her that the door was opened, Tess quickly heads into The Shrine of the Silver Monkey and climbs on top of the cabinets to grab the pieces of the monkey. First grabbing the base, and then the middle piece and head at the same time, Tess started assembling the monkey...backwards! But this was temporary, as Tess only did this just to place the pieces together first before properly placing the statue onto the pedestal and putting on the head to complete the statue. Once done, the door to The Dark Forest opened up, which was a good thing as that route can definitely save Tess some time. Now being one room away from the dried ear of corn, Tess tries searching for the key within the trees. But in the process of doing so, she gets caught by the spirit of a temple guard residing inside the tree on the left. Unfortunately, it took Tess sometime to take off her pendant and give it to the spirit.
Tess in the Dark Forest
And after doing so, she stuck her hand inside the same tree and found the key within it. But when Tess went to try it on one of the doors, she didn't know where to place it at first. She attempted to unlock the already unlocked door to The Shrine of the Silver Monkey, but she turns around and finally uses it to unlock the door to The Jester's Court. But with the last seconds ticking down, it's definitely going to be a close one. Though in the end, Tess was unable to grab the ear of corn on time as time ran out as soon as she climbed into The Jester's Court, with her grabbing it just after Kirk announced the game was over.

Tess Grabs the Dried Ear of Corn of Sojourner Truth After Time Ran Out

The layout of the temple for this episode was fair, and both members of the Green Monkeys knew what to do to get the job done. But had bad luck not occur for Tess towards the end of the run, and had she been a bit quicker when it came to giving up her pendant. She would have had more time to complete the objective and even being able to grab the dried ear of corn on time. Regardless, the two still did a very good job during their time in the temple, but in the end, it wasn't meant to be.
