Steps of Knowledge

One of the most powerful women in history was Empress Theodora. She was the wife of Emperor Justinian, who ruled Constantinople in the early 500s. She passed many laws which helped the common people, and some say she wore the pants in the Royal Family. When a rebellion threatened to topple the Emperor, legend has it that Justinian's generals found him in a panic.

Empress Theodora in the Legend

"You must flee, my Lord," said one.

"A fast galley awaits you at the harbor," said another.

But the Emperor just ran from window to window saying, "Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh."

Empress Theodora said, "Justinian, we're not going anywhere. I'd rather be buried in my Imperial Purple Robe than be run out of this town by those rats. Now, pull yourself together before they pull you apart."

According to legend, Theodora rallied the generals, and with Justinian in the lead, they conquered the rebels. Theodora's brave words were credited with saving the empire, not to mention her Imperial Purple Robe.

Temple Games

The Green Monkeys are Joshua Siniscalco and Ashley. The Orange Iguanas are Laura and Stephen.

Byzantine Empire (Mountain)[]

While Theodora was empress, the Byzantine Empire expanded by conquering other countries. Before Stephen and Joshua stood a mountain with many holes into which their pegs fit, and is divided into four sections, each named after a part of the Byzantine Empire: Alexandria, Córdoba, Rome, and Carthage. Each territory can be won by either player placing his peg in the secret hole that sets off the victory salute. When Kirk gave the signal, both players had to start putting their pegs into as many holes as possible. For each territory won, they had to move on to the next one. The player to win all four territories or the player furthest along in 60 seconds won. Both players tied with two territories, awarding each of them a half pendant of life.

Gold for Corn (Zip-line)[]

Byzantium was an important link for trade between Europe and Asia, and Laura and Ashley's task was to re-establish that trade. When Kirk gave the signal, they each had to pick up a golden object, place it in their pouch, grab the hanger above them and swoop down to the opposite platform. Once there, they had to place the golden object in their bucket, grab an ear of corn, grab the next handle, and zip-line back with the corn. Once back at the starting point, they had to place the corn on their back board. The player to complete the most trades in 60 seconds won. Both players tied with three pieces of corn, awarding each of them a half pendant of life.

Rebels to Rubble (Slingshot Bowling)[]

Empress Theodora smashed the rebels and saved the city of Byzantium. The teams' task was to defend Byzantium by smashing the rebel army. When Kirk gave the signal, one player had to load their team's slingshot and launch a ball at the enemy troops on the wall. Then, it was his/her partner's turn. The team to knock over four rebel statues or the team furthest along in 60 seconds won. The Green Monkeys won the game and the full pendant after knocking down two statues while the Orange Iguanas was unable to knock down any, sending the Green Monkeys to Olmec's Temple with two full pendants.

Temple Run

Ashley went into the Temple first, moving at a somewhat slow pace. Starting out by heading up into The Crypt, Ashley did not know what to do at first and presumed she could immediately head down into The Pit of Despair without doing anything. But eventually, Ashley finally realized what she had to do and started pulling on the books from the skeletons. After pulling on all three books, Ashley then proceeded down into The Pit of Despair, where she decides to stick to the bottom floor and opens up the door to The Throne Room. Sitting on the semi-slowly rotating throne, Ashley was then able to access The Swamp from there. In the murky swamp, Ashley had somewhat of a struggle getting through the netting as she was trying to get in and get out of the room. But it didn't cost any significant time whatsoever, and she proceeds into The Dark Forest with 1:55 left on the clock.
Ashley Tries to Bust Through the Stone Wall to No Avail
Upon entering the forest, Ashley attempted to bust through The Stone Wall so she can grab the purple robe within The Mine Shaft. However, despite applying enough pressure to leave an indent, The Stone Wall did not break down. Meaning that the stone wall was impenetrable in order to prevent an easy victory. With the only other choice left in stock, Ashley had to put her hands in the trees to find the key in order to go into The Shrine of the Silver Monkey. But upon checking the tree on the right, a temple spirit that was residing in the tree moved one of its arms to capture Ashley, (Or more like a small slap), with 1:46 remaining. After exchanging her Pendant of Life for the key, Ashley opened the door to The Shrine of the Silver Monkey and headed up. Soon after she entered the room, the second Temple Guard emerged behind the door with 1:25 remaining, causing her to scream. Thus, removing Ashley from the Temple.

Now it was Joshua's turn to try his luck. Following the same exact path that Ashley went through, Joshua moved through the rooms at a moderately faster pace within the temple. And with 42 seconds remaining, Joshua entered The Shrine and got to work on assembling the monkey statue. And while he had no problems assembling the monkey, Joshua did almost knock over the based off the pedestal while trying to put on the middle piece, but he adjusts it just before he places the head on. Completing the statue with twenty-one seconds left, Joshua enters The Viper's Nest and climbs into the elevator.
Joshua Siniscalco Tries to Grab the Imperial Purple Robe of Empress Theodora

Joshua tried to grab the purple robe by reaching down.

In this extremely nail-biting situation, Joshua slowly descends into The Mine Shaft during the last ten seconds of the run, now being several inches away from the robe it seemed that Joshua was going to make it. But before the elevator completely descended into The Mine Shaft, Joshua decides to make a last-ditch effort to grab the robe on time. What he decided to do was to let go of the actuators that made the elevator descend and tried with all his might to reach down for the robe from the elevator. But just like with Jennifer in The Dragon Lady and the Blue Pearl, Joshua was just a few inches short from reaching the imperial purple robe, and by then, time shortly expired in another heartbreaking ending within Legends history.

Notes

  • This is the first episode in Season 2 where an artifact is placed in the Mine Shaft.
  • This is the first episode where a team of Green Monkeys defeated a team Orange Iguanas in the Temple Games to compete in the Temple Run. This is also the only episode before Season 3 where this happens.
  • In one of the square-shaped holes at the back of the Pit of Despair, a Temple Guard can be seen walking to a room where he was going to hide in.
  • This was the second of two episodes where an artifact is placed in the bottom corner room and the Stone Wall did not break down, presumably to prevent an easy grand prize win. The first was The Keys to the Alhambra.
  • This was the first episode where a Temple Spirit appears in the Camera-Right tree of the Dark Forest.
  • The Red Jaguars and Silver Snakes later appear in The Priceless Portrait of the Polynesian Girl, both wearing the same team colors.
  • Joshua of the Green Monkeys would return in the reboot series along with Nick from Season 1's Henry VIII's Great Seal in The Hindu Legend of Rama as part of the Blue Barracudas.
  • According to Joshua during a podcast, he claimed that the original winners of the steps of knowledge was actually The Red Jaguars and The Silver Snakes. After shooting the steps of knowledge, a PA informed the teams that one of the questions Olmec asked was answered incorrectly but was marked as correct. Because of this, they had to reshoot the steps but with new questions.
  • A duplicate of this episode replaces Season 1 Episode 36 on Pluto TV prints.[1]
  • It was once rumored that a production error was the reason for the Mine Shaft elevator stopping before Joshua could grab the robe. This rumor is false as the elevator connecting the top corner room to the Mine Shaft or Well in the first two original-run seasons would work by having a contestant riding it push down on two actuators. Right before Joshua tried to grab the robe, he took his hands off the actuators instead of waiting for the elevator to land.
