Steps of Knowledge

One of the most daring navigators in history was the Ancient Greek explorer Pytheas. Around 300 B.C., with just one small ship, he sailed all the way around the Northern coast of Europe, but it wasn't easy. According to legend, after days in the open ocean without food, a lookout began shouting.

"Look— out there! What's that?!"

"It's an island with a head!"

"It's an island with a tail!"

"It's an island with a head and tail!"

There, off the bow, was the most gigantic fish they'd ever seen -- a whale! But Pytheas was unafraid.

"Looks like dinner to me."

He baited the anchor and threw it overboard. The whale took the bait, and Pytheas grabbed the rope, but it dragged him into the sea. As the horrified sailors looked on, the angry whale breached and dove, carrying Pytheas with him, but he was soon exhausted, and Pytheas climbed up the rope, and conked the whale on the head. When the ship drew near, Pytheas waved.

"Look, boys. Fish sticks."

The starving men feasted on the whale and kept one gigantic bone as proof of their story. But it washed overboard during a storm and drifted to the Temple.

The Red Jaguars are Allison, who plays the piano and wants to be a teacher, and Patrick, who likes swimming and wants to be an engineer. The Orange Iguanas are Brittany, who plays softball and dances nine hours a week, and Damien, who likes football and has previously lived in Brooklyn, Michigan, Missouri, and Wisconsin ("this boy's a travelin' fool!", jokes Kirk).

Fishing on the Ocean (Rotating Levers)[]

While on the voyage, Pytheas and his men caught fish for food; Damien and Patrick had to prove their own fishermen skills. When Kirk said 'go', each boy would run around, grab a fish, and go to the green net on the pedestal to deposit it; whoever caught all 12 fish, or was further along within 60 seconds would win. Damien won 6-3, giving the Orange Iguanas a half pendant.

Barnacle Removal (Oversized Table)[]

Lost Whale Bone of Pytheas Barnacle Removal Temple Game

Whales, just like ships, eventually grow barnacles on their underbelly after some time, which is an inconvenience to them; here, Allison and Brittany would help a whale out. When Kirk said 'go', each girl would crawl out and remove a barnacle, then return to drop it in their crate; whoever got all eight barnacles, or was further along within 60 seconds would win. After a close competition, both girls tied with four barnacles, giving the Red Jaguars a half pendant and completing the Orange Iguanas' pendant.

Anchor Drop (Trampoline Web)[]

Anchor Drop Temple Game

Sailing a ship without knowing how to drop anchor is no different to driving a car without brakes; here, the teams would get a lesson in dropping anchors. When Kirk said 'go', one player would run forward and launch him/herself onto the web and drop one of the 6 anchors, proceeding to come back down and allow their partner to drop the next anchor. Whoever dropped all six anchors, or was further along within 60 seconds would win; both teams tied with three anchors dropped, but the Orange Iguanas would go to the Temple with two pendants over the Red Jaguars' 1½ pendants.

Temple Run

Brittany went into the temple first, moving at a moderate but steady pace. She starts off by heading up into The Crypt and unlocks the door to The Pit of the Pendulum after pulling on only one book. (Though Brittany did get a bit spooked due to the sound effect of the door opening up). Carefully walking along the platform, Brittany grabs the rope swing and knocks down the column, which then unlocks the door to The Tomb of the Headless Kings. Upon entering the room, Brittany encounters the first temple guard just as she was about to pull on one of the ropes. Quickly forking over her pendant, Brittany immediately got to work on finding the missing skull. After pulling on nearly every rope within the room, she finds the skull and unlocks the door to The Jester's Court after placing it onto the king on the right. (Being the second one that she had to try).

Slightly picking up the pace, Brittany ended up having to try all three wall paintings so she can enter The Dark Forest. (The one on the left being the correct one). Once Brittany entered the forest, she decided to not search for the key within the trees and instead opted to bust through The Stone Wall and into The Quicksand Bog. While Kirk commented that some players may never come back out from the bog. Luckily, that didn't happen for Brittany, and she was able to climb out of the murky bog using the Shrine-Bog ladder. And fortunately for her, she was able to unlock the door to The Shrine of the Silver Monkey. (Smart move!). And while this move definitely can save a lot of time for Brittany and Damian, it unfortunately came at a cost. Because after Brittany grabbed the base and placed it onto the pedestal, the second temple guard jumped out and captured Brittany. (Even waiting for the perfect time to scare her). Removing her from the temple with 1:21 left on the clock.

Now it was Damian's turn to enter the temple and try his luck. Unfortunately, he moved at a slow pace and casually jogged through each room within the temple. And while he never hesitated, and having a good map of the temple in his head. Damian really needed to pick up some speed if he wanted to get to The Chamber of the Sacred Markers on time. But when he was in The Quicksand Bog, Damian struggled while climbing up the ladder as he had to carefully swing to the other side of the ladder as he couldn't slip through the holes within the ladder. And after nearly an entire minute of entering the temple, Damian finally makes it to The Shrine of the Silver Monkey and assembles the monkey at a good pace. And with 11 seconds remaining, Damian heads into The Room of the Ancient Warriors with him being one room away from the lost whale bone. If he gets lucky, he can get to The Chamber of the Sacred Markers on time. But moving at the same pace, Damian slowly pulls down the levers of the armor on the left and the middle armor, but both did not unlock the door to The Chamber. And just as he finished trying the middle armor, time expired, with the whale bone being forever lost within the temple.

While both members of the Orange Iguanas had a good map of the temple in their heads and did not hesitate in anyway shape or form in any of the rooms. But had Damian moved at a much faster pace, he would have been able to grab the bone on time and even secure a victory, considering the amount of time they had left on the clock. With Kirk even pointing out "You can’t slow down too much in the temple because it will get you." Regardless, the two still did good within the temple. And considering they got the central shaft room as the placement of the artifact (which is normally very hard to accomplish a temple run victory or being able to grab the artifact on time), and managing to get through most of the rooms without much bad luck happening is impressive.
