Moat Crossing

Before the players stood three "icebergs" floating in the moat. The players had to cross the moat by jumping from iceberg to iceberg without using their hands. If at any point a player fell off an iceberg, or touched the iceberg with their hands, they would have to swim back to the start and try again. Once the first team member made it across, it would be the second teammate's turn to do the same. Once both players were successfully across, they had to run over and hit the gong.

Steps of Knowledge

One of the most skillful leaders of Old Japan was Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Tokugawa Dynasty. In 1603, when Ieyasu became the shogun, or ruler, of Japan, he was able to conquer all of the warlords who tried to resist him except one, the legendary Lord Yoritomo. Ieyasu gathered a huge army and savagely fought against the proud Yoritomo. For weeks, they battled. Finally, the castle fell, and Yoritomo, still unhumbled, was brought before Ieyasu in chains.

"Yoritomo, do you know the penalty for disobeying the shogun?"

"I'm grounded for two weeks with no TV?"

"Ordinarily, I'd insist on beheading you."

"But sire, my hat collection...!"

"Do not choke, imputent one, you are a brave warrior, and I know that your word is good. If you will swear allegiance to me, I will restore your land and title, and spare your life."

Moved by Ieyasu's words, Yoritomo pledged his support. Legend has it Ieyasu gave Yoritomo his red sash as a token of respect. And over the centuries, the sash has made its way to the Temple.

Temple Games

The Red Jaguars are Melody, who plays basketball with her brothers and wants to be a lawyer, and Troy, who plays basketball, volleyball, and wants to be a pro college coach. The Blue Barracudas are Brandy, who enjoys gymnastics and wants to be a photographer, and Quentin, who plays chess and wants to be a video tester.

Japan's Rising Suns (Ceiling)[]

Japan is known as the land of the rising sun, which is signified by the red sun on the Japanese flag; when Kirk gave the signal, Troy and Quentin must grab a sun and jump up to place it in the sky. The player who places all ten of their suns in the sky or the player who has the most suns in the sky after 60 seconds wins. Quentin was able to place all of his suns with 4 seconds remaining, winning his team a half-Pendant (Troy had eight suns in the sky).

Family Crests (Oversized Table)[]

When Tokugawa demolished Yoritomo's castle, his army confiscated all of the family crests; when Kirk gave the signal, Brandy and Melody must crawl under a table to retrieve a family crest and crawl back to place it in their bin. The player who retrieved all six of the crests or the player with the most crests after 60 seconds wins. Both girls ended up placing four crests in their respective bin (although one of Brandy's crests landed outside her bin and didn't count towards her score), awarding the Red Jaguars a half-Pendant, and the Blue Barracudas a full Pendant.

Conquered Japanese Cities (Slingshot Wall)[]

Tokugawa Ieyasu conquered all the other warlords in Japan to make himself the Shogun; before both teams was a wall with four target areas of differing heights, representing four Japanese cities (Kyoto, Nagoya, Edo, and Osaka). Both girls must launch a ball from a slingshot to their partners, who place it on the wall, signifying the city has be conquered. Then the boys must climb up the wall and repeat the process with the next city. The first team to conquer all four cities or the team who is further along within 60 seconds wins. Although the Red Jaguars were initially in the lead, the Blue Barracudas was able to catch up and surpass them at the last second. The Blue Barracudas won the game just after having conquered Edo, while the Red Jaguars had only conquered Nagoya, winning them the full pendant and earning them the right to compete in Olmec's Temple.

Temple Run

Brandy went into the temple, moving at a moderate pace. Waving off the smoke, Brandy decides to enter The Crypt first, where she got a bit spooked from the sound effects after pulling on one of the books from the skeletons. After pulling on the other two books, Brandy unlocks the door to The Pit of the Pendulum where she knocks over the column and successfully pulls herself back to the platform. This is good, as both the door to The King's Storeroom and The Chamber of the Sacred Markers had opened up, so Brandy decides to head to the top of the central shaft and into The King's Storeroom. In there, Brandy encounters the first temple guard just after she smashed the second pot. After giving up her pendant, Brandy discovers that the second pot she smashed contained the key, but it was the pedestal on the left (which contained the first pot she smashed) that opened up the door to The Room of the Ancient Warriors. Heading down a level, Brandy first tries the armor on the right, but it didn't work, but after trying the middle armor, she unlocks the door to The Shrine of the Silver Monkey and heads in there with 1:57 left. In the shrine, Brandy had no problem assembling the monkey statue, and while it did take her a bit to put together the pieces, she got job the done and unlocked two new paths for her to choose from: The Room of the Secret Password, and The Quicksand Bog. And while Brandy was about to head down into The Quicksand Bog, she changes her mind at the last second to instead head into The Room of the Secret Password. (Possibily noticing that a temple guard was residing in that room). Once in the room, Brandy took out one of the passwords and said "Long Live Olmec" to try to open the door to The Pharaoh's Secret Passage. But it's clear that temple guards really hate hearing wrong passwords because the second temple pops out from behind the door and captures Brandy, removing her from the temple with 1:21 left on the clock.

Now it was time for Quentin to take over. Moving at the same pace as his partner, Quentin went through the same direct path that Brandy went through. However, while leaving The King's Storeroom, he started to slow down and took his time while walking down the steps. And even with Kirk telling him to move a bit quicker, Quentin continued to move at the same pace, but he eventually makes his way to The Room of the Secret Password with 56 seconds left and immediately starts reading the remaining passwords. In the end, the password "Open Sesame" was the one that allowed him to access The Quicksand Bog. But upon entering there, Quentin encounters the third and final temple guard, and forks over his pendant of life before continuing into The Dark Forest. With 21 seconds left, Quentin starts searching through the trees for the keys, to which he finds it within the tree on the right and uses it to unlock the door to The Jester's Court. And with a lucky break, Quentin was able to unlock the door to The Tomb of the Headless Kings after only trying the middle painting. With Brandy cheering him on and with the last remaining seconds counting down, Quentin quickly runs to The Tomb to grab the red sash on time. But sadly, time ran out just as he stepped foot into the room, just mere inches away from the red sash.

While both members had a good map of the temple in their heads and knew how to complete the objectives without any issues. But had they moved a bit quicker, and had Brandy not changed her path and continued her way into The Quicksand Bog, they would have had more time to get to the red sash and to possibly get it out on time.
