Moat CrossingOne at a time, the players on each team had to swing on a rope to reach a suspended net, climb over the net and then wade to the other side of the Moat. The second player would proceed to jump into the water, get the rope and do the same.
Steps of KnowledgeOne of the greatest crusaders for human rights was the African-American Frederick Douglass. He worked to outlaw slavery, and when the Civil War broke out, he encouraged blacks to fight in the Union Army. In 1847, Douglass founded a New York paper called The North Star; legend has it that one evening, a group of men burst into the office. "We gotta see the editor! It's a matter of life and death!" "Yeah! Hears!" "I AM the editor." "We don't like what you've been printin'... like equal rights for ALL men." "If you don't think all men are created equal, take it up with the guys that wrote the Declaration of Independence." "We didn't come here for a history lesson! We're gonna trash this place!" They moved menacingly towards one of the printing presses, but Douglass beat them to it: "You can smash this place and I'll open the paper elsewhere. Stop me and others will take my place. You came here to destroy my paper? Let me help you!" Douglass smashed the printing press himself. "You can smash machines, but you can't smash ideas." Ashamed, the men filtered out. Douglass wiped his brow and picked up a fragment of the press, which he kept for years, until it ultimately made its way to the Temple.
Temple GamesThe Red Jaguars are Dana and Jason. The Purple Parrots are Sharon and Gary. Newspaper Delivery (Galloping Machine)[]The first game featured the third-season horse machine, which galloped instead of spinning like the machine one year prior. However, it also pitted the boys against each other in a race to try "delivering" as many newspapers (throwing them in the designated team bin) as possible while staying on the horse. Gary fell several more times than did Jason, but this gave Jason the opportunity to throw additional newspapers— although not explicitly stated, it was probably a rule that one player had to wait until the opponent was back on the horse before throwing again. The two Jason managed to get in the bin while Gary was off the horse actually let the Red Jaguars win the first half-Pendant, with a score of 8-7 in the game. Inkwells (Cubbyhole Web)[]The second game was a race between Dana and Sharon to collect the most full inkwells for the newspaper within 60 seconds— some of the cubbyholes along the edges of the net contained empty inkwells instead, to slow players down. Dana's strategy of jumping down as soon as she found a full inkwell worked nicely for her; Sharon followed suit quickly, but what cost her the chance at taking the lead was missing the bin when she tried to throw one of the inkwells in; she stalled for a few seconds while Dana took the lead and eventually won 5-4, completing the first Pendant of Life for her team. Underground Railroad (Sinking Steps)[]The third Temple Game talked about the Underground Railroad, of which Frederick Douglass was a prominent supporter. The game with the sinking steps was used, and a platform that sank was supposed to represent a player getting caught while trying to escape. With fourteen seconds on the clock, Dana made it to the other side, but whether or not she played fair is up for debate— the Red Jaguars tried skipping the first step at least once during the game without Kirk catching them, but when she took her first step on the attempt that got her to the other side, the camera cut away before we could actually see where she landed. Nevertheless, Kirk awarded the Red Jaguars the full Pendant of Life because they were the first to get a player across, and as a result, they shut out the Purple Parrots with a score of 2 Pendants-0.
Temple RunJason went into the temple first, moving at a moderately fast pace. He started off by heading down into The Ledges and climbing up through the caverns to unlock the upper crawl tube in order to enter to The Pit of the Pendulum. Without hesitating, Jason immediately grabs onto the rope swing and knocks down the column, but he couldn't get back onto the platform and he ends up falling off the swing. Because of this, Jason had to climb back up using The Wall Climb as the door to The Tomb of the Headless Kings was not open. Dana, on the side, was shouting for Jason to hurry as he was struggling to climb up back to the platform. Eventually, he makes it back up and enters The Chamber of the Sacred Markers where he completes the objective without any issues at all. (And at a fast pace too). With Dana cheering him on, Jason now moves into The Room of the Ancient Warriors with 1:56 left. However, he knew for a fact that a temple guard was hiding behind the armor on the right, so Jason tried his best to avoid trying the armor. He tries the middle and the armor on the left, but both were unsuccessful. Because he didn't want to get caught by the guard, Jason decides to go back to The Chamber of the Sacred Markers to find a different path. (Even though there would be no other way for him to move on as he would go around in a full circle, full of dead ends). Because of this, Dana screamed at Jason to go back and try the armor. With no other choice, Jason is forced to go back and get caught by the first temple guard. (Ultimately costing a significant amount of time). After the temple guard releases his grip on Jason, he continues into The Shrine of the Silver Monkey where he makes a smart move by grabbing all three pieces at once. On top of that, he also manages to assemble the monkey statue at a great speed as well and unlocks the doors to The Dark Forest and The Room of the Secret Password. Unfortunately, Jason didn't notice that the door to The Dark Forest was opened, and he continued through the upper floor, into The Room of the Secret Password. While most contestants have to say a password in order to open The Pharaoh's Secret Passage, Jason didn't have to at all. In fact, the passageway was already opened! So, Jason quickly slides down the slide and enters The Quicksand Bog with 48 seconds left. However, he made a silly mistake by trying to climb back up to The Shrine of the Silver Monkey. Luckily, Jason doesn't take too long to realize that he had to plow through The Stone Wall, to which he does with 39 seconds left. Now in The Dark Forest, Jason tries to search for the key within the trees, but the spirit of a temple guard was residing inside the tree on the left and made every attempt to grab Jason. After avoiding it for some time by searching in the tree on the right, Jason is forced to get caught again by the temple guard and was then taken out of the temple with 30 seconds left. Now it was Dana's turn to try her luck. But it's clear with the amount of time she had left, there was no way she could make it there on time no matter how fast she ran. Following the same path as Jason, she enters The Ledges but accidently went too far down and ends up crawling to where the old entrance to The Cave of Sighs was. Once realizing her mistake, Dana makes her way back up and uses the lower crawl tube and enters The Pit of the Pendulum. And it was there, where time ran out just as she was climbing the wall climb. While it was shown that the path they were given was long but quite do-able to do on time. And while both members moved at a good pace, with Jason clearing out most of the objectives in each room at a fast pace. But it was clear that no matter what room they entered that had a temple guard residing in it, they were completely unavoidable. And had Jason not tried so hard to avoid them, and noticing the door to The Dark Forest from The Shrine of the Silver Monkey, they would have had a better shot on getting to The Tomb of the Headless Kings on time. (Even with Dana accidently going further down in The Ledges).
