Ty also competed on Nickelodeon GUTS known as Ty "Mouth of the South" Mathen, the year before he competed on LOTHT and got third place climbing the Aggro Crag, finishing with the silver medal overall with a score of 1,275 points.
Ty was the first contestant to lose his Pendant of Life, though in his case, a stage hand tossed him back the pendant before he encountered a Temple Guard.
He is also the only male Orange Iguana who has ever performed a solo run.
A user by the name of Nushmutt200 received a reply from Ty on his upload of The Lucky Medallion of Atocha temple run. When asked to talk about his experience on the show, Ty had this to say:
Nushmutt200: Did you choose to be on the Orange Iguanas or were you assigned that?
Ty: I was assigned to the Orange Iguanas. One interesting fact though. They would shoot 4/5 episodes per day so it would lead to many hours of downtime in between filming. About an hour before the Temple run the Nickelodeon staff came in and gave my partner and I a map of the temple. They asked us to study the map and also trace the route onto the map to turn in before recording. When the time came to turn it in I refused to allow my partner or I to give them our route. I said to the staff “why would I tell you my route so you can stage temple guards!” The producer came in and said I was the only kid to refuse to do what they asked and my question made sense. Then he hurried us onto the set and I ran the temple. I always say if I had given them my route I would of never made it through. [1]
